A Modern-Day Innkeeper: Finn O’Sullivan

Finn O’Sullivan is one of Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation’s most dedicated supporters. At just eleven years old, he does all he can to support mothers, babies, and families living in the Holy Land. Last year, as a student and avid basketball player at Saint David’s School in New York City, Finn helped organize a fundraiser that brought in nearly $600.00 in support of Holy Family Hospital.

Finn first learned about Holy Family Hospital while sitting in a pew at St. John the Evangelist Church in New York. His pastor, Msgr. Douglas Mathers, spoke about the work of the Hospital in a homily. HFHF Chairman Ellen Shafer and HFHF Board Member Marissa Del Rosario-Blackett also spoke about the good works of the Hospital in a parish appeal.

As a chaplain of the American Association of the Order of Malta, Msgr. Mathers has been privileged to go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Today, the families of Bethlehem hold a special meaning for him.

“There is a positive quality,” he says, “to witnessing to the Lord in the place where He was born.”

Finn, too, was moved by the great needs of families in Bethlehem, particularly the needs of children.

“When I was a baby I was sick,” he tells us. “I had stomach problems and needed special care. So I felt that we had to help the other babies who are sick in Bethlehem.”

As a member of the fifth grade student council at Saint David’s, he was able to recommend Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation as the designated charity for the school’s annual Basketball Shootout Fundraiser. His fellow students were eager to help.

The day of the Shootout, students came together to shoot baskets. For each shot made, a donation was given to Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation. The baskets quickly added up to over $500, speaking not only to these fifth graders’ athleticism, but also their generosity and goodwill.

We were pleased to be able to honor Finn’s hard work at the Foundation’s annual New York Brunch, in conjunction with the Order of Malta – American Association’s Investiture Weekend.

Finn plans to one day visit the Holy Land and see the place where Jesus was born. He also hopes to visit Holy Family Hospital and meet some of the families being helped there.
