Located just 1,500 steps from the birthplace of Christ, Holy Family Hospital is a Catholic teaching maternity and neonatal critical care center serving poor, refugee, and at-risk families in the Holy Land. COVID arrived in Bethlehem in March closing down businesses resulting in a salary stoppage for 90% of the people. Things have not improved. Today, families can barely afford food, let alone medical care.
Baby Karim was born 10 weeks early in the middle of the COVID pandemic on the side of the road in the back of a borrowed car behind a roadblock 10 minutes away from Holy Family Hospital. The medical team waiting for them at Holy Family Hospital immediately intubated the feeble 2 lb baby, and tended to his mother. Babies like Karim do not stop being born just because there is a pandemic and resulting humanitarian crisis.
